Ashworth High Secure Hospital wins award for digital innovations

Mersey Care’s Director of Security at Ashworth Hospital has won a prestigious national award for security innovation after introducing digital innovations within the high secure setting.

Dave McKenna won the accolade at the National Association for Healthcare Security Awards for a series of initiatives introduced within the hospital to improve the patients’ digital experience.

“I’m delighted to have won this award, which really does reflect on the whole team here at Ashworth, who have worked so hard to ensure the standards of care and the patient experience remains at the highest possible standard,” he said.

“We’re acutely aware of the demographic of our patients in secure services, particularly in relation to our younger service users. It’s important they avoid being isolated from digital technology while being cared for in hospital, particularly when you consider how important a role it plays in all our lives.”

The award judges were particularly impressed with several developments inside Ashworth High Secure Hospital, including:

  • Kiosk Information Service: This is being developed on all high secure wards and in the new medium secure hospital, which is currently being built at Maghull Health Park. It will allow patient’s access to internal hospital services such as food menus, personal finance accounts, online shopping services, educational and general information such as National Geographic and encyclopaedias. The system will also include mental health awareness programs to aid patient treatment and recovery in the future
  • Video Visits: This will enable patients who find it difficult to remain in contact with family and friends to maintain and develop contacts.
