Christmas and mental health

This time of year we can feel extra pressure put on us that affects our mental health in lots of different ways.

You may feel alone or left out because others seem happy when you’re not, or feel frustrated because of other people’s views of a ‘perfect’ Christmas. You may find this time of year difficult with other events going on in your life or want to celebrate with someone who is struggling.

It’s important to remember that you are not alone and there are things you can do to get help.

Some top tips include

  • Plan ahead – if you’re going somewhere unfamiliar or somewhere that makes you feel uncomfortable, think about what you can do or take with you to make you feel more comfortable. Make a list of useful services or close contacts you can call. Plan something you enjoy that you can look forward to.
  • Talk to others – open up to others about your mental health, this can be in person or an online community. Remember you don’t have to justify yourself to others.
  • Be patient and kind to yourself – priorities what is best for you
