Older people’s inpatient services - Fern Ward

Fern Ward is a 16 bedded mixed gender dementia care unit. The Ward includes single occupancy ensuite rooms and facilities including, extensive activity spaces and an Activities of Daily Living (ADL) kitchen which supports service users who need further assessment and treatment from the multidisciplinary team, working towards joint goals to support timely discharge. 

The Ward features a dementia friendly garden which further enhances the service user experience as well as that of carers and staff. It has all weather surfaces and has been designed to prevent slips, trips and falls, plus there’s a range of outdoor features and equipment, storage and seating areas for all year round use.

Fern Ward has an immersive suite which allows service users to engage in additional therapeutic activities. The multidisciplinary team includes: doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists and a range of other professionals.

Older people’s community mental health team (Liverpool and Kirkby Complex Care CMHT)

Older people’s community mental health teams relocated from Mossley Hill and Norris Green to a base at Leigh Moss Hospital. The teams support people with dementia of any age and people with mental health problems aged 70 and over, who are residents of Liverpool and Kirkby. The multidisciplinary team provides community based mental health support including assessment, treatment and psychosocial interventions to enable people to live well with their conditions. The service also includes the Care Navigator service which provides support and signposting for people with dementia and carers, from diagnosis onwards .

Visiting arrangements

Fern Ward has a flexible approach to visiting, working with families and carers to facilitate visits at a range of times usually from 10am till 10pm. Protected meal times are encouraged at:

• 9am to 10am
• 12 noon to 1pm
• 4.30pm to 5.30 pm.

The team recognises that families may want to support their loved ones during meal times, should they need assistance, so will support visits during meal times, on request.

Children can visit the Ward using one of our family rooms, however, visits with children under 18 years of age must be booked in advance to ensure a family room is available.
