We are a psychological therapies service which provides psychological assessment, formulation and intervention for adults (aged 16 and over) and for those who are experiencing an eating disorder. After your assessment you’ll be placed on our waiting list to receive therapy.
Our service
We offer a range of evidence based therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), family therapy, MANTRA therapy and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), delivered in both individual and group settings. We also offer consultation to other services when direct working is not considered the most appropriate form of intervention.
In addition to receiving therapy, there is other support available to help you with your recovery at the Eating Disorder Service, which you can access straight away. This guide will explain what’s available and how to access it.
Workshops
Our workshops are drop in, so there is no need to pre book. They are open to all clients, including those on our waiting list.
Cameras are optional and there will be a chat box which allows you to contribute to the session or ask any questions.
Bite by bite - a virtual psychoeducation workshop
It’s highly recommended that all clients attend psychoeducation as part of treatment. It aims to promote insight and understanding in why you are struggling with poor health and crucially, the first steps to recovery.
The workshop explores what an eating disorder is, how it may have developed, the effects it can have on our physical and mental wellbeing and the first steps you can take to recovery. The workshop is led by our service dietician.
Our virtual workshop runs on the first Thursday of every month from 12 noon to 1:30pm on Zoom.

Friends and Family support group
It can be challenging for parents, partners, family members or friends, to care for someone with eating difficulties. Carers reveal they have experienced a range of distressing emotions at times, these include
feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, frustrated, isolated or guilty.
If you feel that anyone in your family or friends would like support with how to best help you in your recovery, we hold a support group on the first Thursday of each month on Zoom, 5.30pm to 7pm. To join our friends and family support group, please contact the service on 0151 471 7751 to book your place.
Dietetic support
Dietitians work closely with other members of the Eating Disorder Service, aiming to support you in developing a positive relationship with food and your body. This may be through:
- Providing guidance about safe refeeding after a period of dietary restriction
- Guiding towards an adequate, varied nutritional intake to support good health and wellbeing, both for now and in the future (for example, in relation to mental health, bone health or fertility)
- Supporting you to let go of unhelpful and unnecessary food rules, to allow for increased food freedom and flexibility.
Please talk to any member of staff about accessing our dietitians.
