The Specialist Support Team has been created to ensure:

  • Better access to relevant treatment closer to home and in the community
  • Fewer people with a learning disability and / or autism having contact with the criminal justice system
  • Fewer people with a learning disability and/ or autism living in a hospital setting
  • Increased capacity to provide effective support for people with Learning Disabilities who offend or display challenging behaviour in community settings
  • When a person does require an admission to hospital their discharge planning will be coordinated and focussed from the point of admission. 

SST is part of Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust’s Specialist Learning Disability Division. The team uses a wide range of health and social care professionals:

  • Experts by Experience
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Psychologists
  • Registered Learning Disability Nurses
  • Social Workers
  • Speech and Language Therapists
  • Support Workers
  • Psychiatrists.

The service has five main functions:

  • To prevent admission to hospital
  • To support and facilitate discharge from hospital
  • To deliver specialist therapeutic interventions close to where people live in the community
  • To offer intensive support and additional capacity to services users, families and carers during times of need
  • Provide training and consultation.

The Greater Manchester team is based in Eccles and covers these areas:

  • Manchester
  • Oldham
  • Rochdale
  • Salford
  • Stockport
  • Tameside
  • Trafford
  • Wigan
