AHP10 Support for People Swallowing Non-Food items (PICA) SOP
This guidance has been developed to support clinical staff who are supporting individuals who experience pica whilst in our inpatient services, and for staff in the community who come into contact with pica. The guidance outlines the definition of pica and aims to provide staff with guidance on how to prevent and respond to incidents of pica. Some individuals consciously choose to swallow non-food items; others swallow non-food items as part of their condition. Management of the pica behaviour will depend on these factors.
