What is a mental health birth plan?

This is a personalised plan designed to support your emotional wellbeing throughout pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period. We understand birth can be an unpredictable experience and we are here to help reduce the effect on your mental health as much as possible.

It is an opportunity to be heard and discuss your individual choices. This plan is for you, your loved ones, and all those involved in your care.

Why is it helpful to have a plan?

This plan helps ensure that the midwives and professionals are aware of how to best support you during your birth experience. It can help reduce the risk of relapse of mental health difficulties and contribute to a smoother, more positive experience.

This plan is designed to empower you throughout your pregnancy, birth and early parenting journey.

What should you do next?

Please take some time to consider what would help make your birth experience feel as calm and positive as possible. Think about what matters most to you during birth, and what kind of support would make you feel safe and cared for.

Keep in mind that birth can be unpredictable and sometimes plans may need to change to keep you and your baby healthy.

What will be discussed?

During our conversation, we will talk about your hopes and wishes for your birth experience, as well as your mental health and what helps you feel calm and supported when things feel challenging.

You are welcome to have someone important to you present during this discussion if that makes you feel more comfortable. We will go into as much or as little detail about your mental health as you feel comfortable sharing.
