Mersey Care is marking Men’s Health Week by releasing a new animation to raise awareness of eating disorders in men and highlight the importance of early identification and support.

Eating disorders in men are often overlooked, with stigma and social expectations making it harder for some to ask for help. Many feel they should cope on their own or hide how they are feeling, which can mean they don't seek support until their symptoms become more severe.

The new animation features real life stories and explains how eating disorders develop in different ways, including how people become increasingly restrictive with food, while others may experience binge eating or excessive exercise.

These behaviours can sometimes be normalised, making underlying difficulties harder to spot, but it’s important to recognise that eating disorders are not solely about food. They are often linked to anxiety, low mood and difficulties coping with life changes.

We all have a role to play in early identification. Sensitive conversations, awareness of less typical presentations and a non-judgemental approach can help people access support sooner.

Creating opportunities for people to talk openly is key, even a brief conversation or signposting to support can be an important first step.

Mersey Care’s Adult Eating Disorder Service provides specialist assessment, treatment and ongoing support. Staff are encouraged to familiarise themselves with referral pathways and available resources.
