We've launched a new guide to help improve nutritional support for mothers and families in the perinatal period

Our Cheshire and Merseyside Specialist Perinatal Service (CMSPS) has collaborated with Think Through Nutrition to launch a nutritional educational resource for women in the perinatal period.

The guide ‘Eating Well during your perinatal journey’ aims to simplify nutritional advice for expectant mothers and to address the diverse challenges that can affect food choices.

Recognising that the perinatal period can present complex challenges, particularly for women experiencing mental health difficulties, the guide offers practical tools such as weekly meal planners, self-care, shopping lists and a bespoke recipe book featuring nutritious, balanced meals tailored for this stage of life. It aims to provide readers with the knowledge to make informed, positive dietary choices

A separate clinician resource has also been developed to equip healthcare professionals within CMSPS with the knowledge and confidence to offer personalised nutritional support as part of their holistic care.

Dr Katy Murgatroyd, Consultant Perinatal Psychiatrist within CMSPS, is leading the project.

“We realised that many women in our care were struggling to find the right nutritional support, especially when managing their mental health and other challenges,” said Dr Murgatroyd.

“This resource enhances our team’s ability to offer high-quality, individualised nutritional guidance to mums, babies and families. This reinforces our commitment to whole-person care.”

Tahani Saridar, CEO of Think Through Nutrition, said: “Nutrition plays a powerful role in both physical and mental wellbeing, especially during the perinatal period, when women often face heightened emotional, physiological and practical challenges.

“Think Through Nutrition is proud to have worked with the CMSPS team to create a resource that makes good nutrition more accessible, realistic and relevant for mothers and families. It’s designed not just to inform, but to support women in feeling more confident and cared for during this vital stage of life.”

To ensure the resource meets the needs of service users and professionals CMSPS and TTN have embedded a feedback form within the resource. This will gather instant feedback from health professionals and service users as they use it.

This guide is available exclusively to women currently receiving support from the Specialist Perinatal Service.
