Who we are

Our Knowsley and St Helens Eating Disorder Service is a specialist community-based service which provides assessment and treatment for adults with eating disorders.

We are a small, multi-disciplinary team of highly-trained and experienced clinical psychologists and an advanced dietician.

Our service is for adults who have a GP based in Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens or Warrington.

We are here to support men and women aged 18 and over who have a range of problems around eating and body image.

If you think you may have a problem with your eating and would benefit from a referral to our service, please make an appointment to see your GP.

He or she will ask you questions about your eating behaviours and the thoughts and feelings you have around eating. They will then be able to work with you to decide what type of support would be most helpful for you, and if appropriate, they will be able to refer you onto our service for an assessment.

You can also talk to someone from the national eating disorder charity Beat for confidential advice, by calling their helpline on 0345 634 1414.

After we have accepted your referral, you will be invited to attend a few assessment sessions with a clinical psychologist and the advanced dietician. Together, we will then agree a treatment plan with you.

Depending on your needs, we will offer a range of evidence-based psychological and dietetic interventions, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), motivational enhancement therapy, nutritional counselling, education about eating disorders and carer/family support.

Appointments are usually on a weekly or fortnightly basis, and you may be offered individual or group sessions.

In addition to providing an adults' eating disorder service in Knowsley and St Helens, we also provide a children and young people's eating disorder service in Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens and  Warrington.
