Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust’s Sefton Pulmonary Rehabilitation Service is proud to announce its successful accreditation by the National Pulmonary Rehabilitation Service Accreditation Scheme (PRSAS), recognising its commitment to delivering high quality, patient centred care.
This prestigious accreditation confirms that the service meets best practice standards across all aspects of pulmonary rehabilitation, including clinical quality, patient safety, workforce development, and patient experience.
Delivered by the Pulmonary Rehabilitation team in partnership with the Sefton Community Respiratory Team, the programme spans a wide geographical area and is strategically offered at two community venues in the north and south of Sefton. In August 2025, the PRSAS assessment team visited the service, observed a live rehabilitation session, and spoke directly with patients about their experiences.
In preparation for accreditation, the team undertook significant service improvements to enhance programme effectiveness. The official report commended the team’s strong clinical leadership, collaborative working culture, and dedication to staff wellbeing. Patients described the service as “life-changing,” with particular praise for its support of pre-transplant patients, who are able to continue attending sessions right up to their surgery date.
The service was also recognised for its redesigned exercise programme, which reflects the team’s flexibility and commitment to improving patient outcomes. Further commendation was given for the team’s involvement in research exploring the role of volunteers in pulmonary rehabilitation. These volunteers continue to support patients in classes, helping reduce attrition and enhance engagement.
Additionally, the service was celebrated for its consistently low waiting times for both stable and acute patient populations - well below national averages - ensuring timely access to care and improved health outcomes.
This accreditation is a testament to the hard work, innovation, and compassion of the entire team. Their dedication to continuous improvement and patient wellbeing has now been formally recognised and celebrated.
