A Think Family approach
At Mersey Care, safeguarding is rooted in a Think Family approach. This means we look beyond the individual to understand the family, carers, and support networks around them. We recognise that health, wellbeing, and safety are shaped by relationships, and that when someone is struggling, the impact can often be felt by others too.
Think Family brings together how children’s, young peoples’ and adult services work. It helps practitioners identify wider needs, recognise risk early, and offer support to anyone affected — including children, adults, carers, and other family members. This approach is widely recognised as essential to achieving better outcomes and protecting vulnerable people. Safeguarding is not just about recognising concerns; it is about taking thoughtful, proportionate action to help people stay safe and well.
What this means for you
Our staff may ask you about your family, carers, or support network. We do this to understand your situation, the relationships that matter to you, and whether anyone else may need support.
If concerns or additional needs are identified, we will respond by offering help in a supportive way. This may include providing advice, offering support directly, signposting to other services, or working with partner organisations. We aim to work alongside you and other public services locally to achieve the best outcomes for everyone involved.
Support for families and carers
We recognise the vital role that families and carers play, and that caring responsibilities can sometimes affect a person’s own wellbeing. As part of our Think Family approach, we take time to consider the needs of carers and family members and help them access appropriate support in their own right.
What safeguarding does not mean
Safeguarding does not automatically mean referrals to social care, and it does not mean you are in trouble. Wherever possible, we will talk with you about concerns and decisions, and involve you in finding the right support, unless someone is at immediate risk of harm.
Safeguarding at Mersey Care is about working together — noticing concerns early, building on strengths, and helping people and families feel safe, supported, and heard.
