If you are a transgender patient registered at a GP practice and would like to change your name on your medical records, you can ask your GP practice to do this.

Each GP practice has its own procedures. There is no legal requirement for you to provide evidence of a name change, although some practices may ask for documentation as part of their usual process.

How do I access Transcend Psychology?

You can be referred to psychology by a Transcend clinician, usually during first assessment or follow up appointment. Let one of our staff know if you would like a referral for gender related psychological support.

Do I have to access psychology to stay under Transcend?

No, in most cases you do not have to access psychology to remain under the Transcend team. You may be asked to undergo a psychological assessment prior to other treatment at Transcend in specific scenarios such as concerns historical trauma makes a gender incongruence diagnosis difficult.

How many sessions will I have?

We typically offer 12 sessions for our psychological interventions. For Extended assessments, we offer up to six sessions depending on a clients needs.

Are my sessions online or in person?

We do a mix of in person appointments and online appointment on the Attend anywhere platform.
We are based in Liverpool and do have limited access to clinic rooms in the Liverpool city centre for therapy sessions.

Will accessing psychology affect my gender affirming care?

In general, no – accessing psychology will not affect your gender affirming care. Psychology is an option to support you with any gender-specific difficulties that are negatively impacting your life at this point in time.Sometimes, during psychology client may reconsider aspects of their planned care within Transcend due to reflections they have had in psychology.

What happens if I need more than Transcend psychology can provide?

Transcend psychology specifically offers psychological intervention for gender related difficulties. If you have attended all of psychology sessions, and you and your psychologist feel there is more work to be done, it will be reviewed on an individual basis.

If any further psychological needs are not gender specific, we would signpost and support you to the appropriate services in your area. For example, if you were struggling with anxiety, we would encourage a referral to the NHS Talking Therapies service.

Will what we discuss be kept confidential?

If you have discussed information sharing with your GP at the start of your Transcend journey, and agreed to this, any notes made by psychologists can be seen by your GP.
Otherwise, the information you discuss between you and a Transcend Psychologist will be kept confidential. The only time we may break confidentiality if we are worried about imminent risk to yourself, or to another. This would be discussed in session with you.

What psychological support can I have after I finish my Transcend Psychology?

If you feel more psychological input would be helpful, before your sessions end you and your psychologist will review any further areas you may want to work on. During this, your psychologist will support you in identifying what support may be appropriate, and if there is any alternative support outside of Transcend that may be helpful.

Does being transgender or non-binary mean I’m mentally ill?

No – being trans and non-binary does not mean you are mentally unwell. Those within the Trans community are more likely to have mental difficulties due to stigma, pressures and political discussion that they you may face. This can lead to difficulties with anxiety, depression, self image and self confidence. Those within the trans community are also most likely to experience gender dysphoria, which directly impacts how you may view yourself, which often effects how you will engage with yourself and the wider world.

Neurodiversity – Right to Choose Pathway

In areas where NHS Assessments for Autism or ADHD referrals are closed, there is an alternative pathway called ‘Right to Choose’. If you are not already on an NHS waiting list, you can request an Autism or ADHD assessment through this pathway.

This pathway offers an alternative way to access care when there are barriers within the NHS. It allows private providers to deliver NHS‑funded assessments.

Please note: Although waiting times are listed on this website, we recommend checking the estimated waiting time directly on the Right to Choose provider’s website.

A Right to Choose referral must be made by your GP. Most private providers offer documents on their direct websites that you can give your GP to explain the Right to Choose pathway.

To note, in some areas GPs may have a preference to refer to specific Right to Choose providers.
