Looking out for signs of domestic abuse during the festive period

During the festive period, domestic abuse related crimes represent that highest percentage of all crimes in December than the rest of the year. It is important we look out for common signs of domestic abuse and you can report any suspected incidents to the police immediately.

These may include but are not limited to:

  • Jealously and possessiveness
  • Control over what you or someone wears, where to go and who to see
  • Control over finances or essential items such a mobile devices or medication
  • Dramatic changes in mood, from kind and charming to abusive and aggressive
  • Pressure to do things someone doesn’t want to do.

Adults

If you are worried that an adult is at risk of immediate harm then call 999.

If you think that an adult is being harmed or is at risk of being harmed by someone else or is neglecting themselves you can ring the Social Services for the area where the adult lives who needs help or support.

Children

If you believe that a child or young person is at immediate risk, you should report this without delay to the police service on 999.

If you are a child who is suffering from harm, neglect or abuse or are worried that another child may be suffering you can:

  • Talk to someone outside your family that you trust like a teacher, school nurse, police officer or other person in authority.
  • Contact Children’s Social Care for the area in which you live and speak to someone. A Social Worker works for the government and their job is to help you if you need to be protected from harm.
